If you write, you've got to read. That's the rule.

On any given day, I can choose between two newspapers,  six magazines, three newsletters, four hundred contemporary online lit mags, or thirty shelves of hard cover books and a box of perfectly good hand-me-down paperbacks.

I usually have a few going at the same time and one on CD for the car. Add in my growing addiction for quirky and amusing blogs and bizarre websites, I figure I must read four to seven hours a day.

But it's the books that count in the long run, isn't it?  And sure, some books are for research, some for assigned book club reads, some because a friend shoved it on me and said. "Here. Read this. You'll love it," and since I stink at lying, I have to read it.

Some I bought at the library book sale or ordered with gift certificates or brought home because I thought I was "supposed" to read them, like when you meet the author and feel you owe them at least a few hours of your day.

Most of these books I really, really liked and yes, I finished them all.
